Becoming part of the community

A community that I joined this year is a writers group here in the town that I live in. I’ve belonged to several writers groups, but this one piqued my interest because they had a project they were working on. It was a “Build a Book" project where members were given chapters to write and there were  70 chapters in the book. The chapters could only be 800 words long, and I found out about the project by an ad in the paper. Since I didn't belong to the writers group called chapter 1 before, I didn't know what was going before that.

At first I wasn't going to do it with all the work I had going on. This was something I wanted to do as a writer, so I took a chance and got in touch with the president of the writers group. I got my chapter and had fun with the scenario I was given for the chapter.  The complete book was the fictional story of a woman who was born and died here in the town I lived in, and it spanned 78 years.  My chapter was when she was in her late 50’s, and had divorced her husband who had been cheating on her.  I had fun with it, and wished I had volunteered for more chapters.

When the book came out (it was published by a local company with some of the proceeds going to a local charity), about 20 of the writers who took part had a book signing at a local bookstore.  It was fun playing author and signing books.  It made me want to do more.
