“The Road Back” Part IX
“On his own”
He paused, took a deep breath, and told Ed what had
happened. He got the reaction from him that he didn’t want, and the look in Ed’s
eyes said it all. “Man, you’ve got to get back into A.A.,” Ed said, shaking his
head. “Now, can you take me home?”
He started to protest, but he knew it wouldn’t help. If the
tables were turned and Ed was the one seeing dead women, he’d find it hard to
believe too. Especially when it’s coming from an alcoholic. He sighed, picked
up his keys, and knew that this was something he would have to work out on his
own.
After dropping Ed off, he just drove around, trying to clear
his mind and think about what he was going to do next. As he passed the church
where the A.A. meetings were held, a
thought hit him. Maybe he could find more about this “Sam.” Even though it wasn’t
his usual night to go, the sign outside said they have several meeting times,
and right now a meeting was just about to finish. He came back and parked in
the church lot.
As he was about to get out, his cell rang again. It was the
same guy who had called before.
“What’s up, buddy?” the voice said cheerfully. “Are we
having fun yet?”
