I think I’m becoming a “Luddite”---- one who opposes technical or technological change---myself. Even though I teach using technology and have seven different email addresses, an iPhone, and three computers (maybe more?), I really hate to answer the phone, be it at home or on the road. There is one nice thing about a phone: being able to see who’s calling so I don’t have to answer if I don’t want to. I’ll even turn my cell phone off sometimes when I’m out and about. I agree with some of the comments made in this article---it’s rude to be talking face-to-face with someone and say, “Excuse me, I have to take this call.”
If someone did that to me, I’d say, “Excuse me, I’m going to go talk to someone who cares,” and leave the table.
